5 Ways that Sales is Like Dating

1. You never call back right away.

Once you get a sales request, you have a million and one excuses not to call them back right away. Just like when you get a Tinder match, or a date request from a dating site, you need to dig into that person's life until you know everything about them. For sales, it is not any different. Calling back right away seems desperate - instead, you research every inch of their company and prepare you sales pitch accordingly.

2. You sometimes play hard to get.

In life and in business, you have to know that you are the sh*t. Your time is worth money; both business and life partners need to get in line for your goodies. There's nothing wrong with playing a little hard to get when you know that your "products" are worth the time and effort. You NEVER want to come off as desperate.

3. You always act more confident than you actually are.

Confidence in everything. When you know you're worth it, everyone else does too. Even if your product is still in Beta, or your reputation isn't completely spotless, a good sales person knows how to have the confidence to bring any relationship to the next level. It's the same in dating. Everyone gets nervous, but the best know not to show it.

Of course, always be careful not to overcompensate...

4. You pretend that you have plenty of options.

Are they still not completely interested? Are they too interested? Casually mentioning your other important clients or casual dates is always a convenient tactic for the sales or the relationship dance. Companies always do this, screaming LIMITED QUANTITY AVAILABLE when you know there's a whole warehouse of options. "Testimonials" are just another way of showing off your prowess, and a good salesperson knows just how to casually slip them into the conversation.

5. You always keep your options open.

Dating and sales are both fickle subjects... and it's always best to keep all options open. That's why airlines overbook their tickets. That's what Friday AND Saturday are for. And if it doesn't work out, there's always someone else in line that would happily jump on board.
